THE EARLY DAYS
The history of video games is a journey that spans over several decades, going back to the mid-20th century. It all began with simple games like ''Tennis for Two'' in the 1950s, created by William Higinbotham on a large analog computer. In 1962, Steve Russel at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology invented Space war, a computer-based space combat video game for the PDP-1 (Programmed Data Processor-1), then a cutting-edge computer mostly found at universities. It was the first video game that could be played on multiple computer installations. However, in the late 1970s and early 1980s video games started gaining mainstream popularity with iconic titles like ''Pong'' and ''Space Invaders'' in arcades. The advent of home consoles, notably the Atari 2600, brought gaming into households, setting the stage for a thriving industry.
The evolution of video games has been marked by technological advancements. The 1980s saw the emergence of 8-bit consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), while the 1990s introduced 16-bit and 32-bit systems, bringing more complex and immersive gaming experiences. The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a shift toward 3D graphics and the rise of iconic franchises like ''Super Mario 64'' and ''The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time''. With the 21st century come a new era of online gaming, mobile gaming, and virtual reality, pushing the boundaries of what video games can offer in terms of gameplay and immersion.
